All Blacks Win

On Sunday the 1st of November almost everybody in New Zealand was up watching the All Blacks playing the Australians at 3am .Everybody was probably nervous until the All Blacks put in the first massive tackles and smashed the Australians then all the nerves were starting to go away. The Australians were under massive pressure which made the Australians give away a penalty to the All Blacks and Dan Carter kicked it over for 3 points. The same thing happened again but to the All Blacks but without the big hits. Now it was 3-3.The All Blacks expanded their lead to 9-3 before half time. Everyone was thinking 9-3 isn't a bad lead but suddenly the All Blacks got close to the try line and Nehe Milner Skutter was over and he had scored.Dan Carter got the conversion over. At half time the score was 16-3.

Ma'a Nonu scored an amazing try to make it 21-3. Later on in the game Ben Smith got yellow carded. Somehow the Aussies scored 2 really good tries and Bernard Foley the Aussie kicker converted both of the kicks to make it 21-17.Dan Carter got an outstanding drop goal to make it 24-17.The All Blacks finished off their win with an amazing converted try and a penalty kick. The final score was 34-17.  Yah for New Zealand!!

Shake Out Earthquake Drill

Tomorrow on Thursday 15 October schools, colleges, kindergartens and work places around New Zealand are doing Shake Out Earthquake Drill at 9:15 am.

If there is a real earthquake you need to Drop,Cover and Hold. Drop mean get down on the ground. Cover means get under some cover or cover your head and neck with your arms. Hold means to hold on to something stable like a desk or a table. If you're outside just get in a turtle position.

Always move away from the windows because they could smash to the ground. A good way to stay safe is under a door frame because even though the rest of the building might fall down, the door frame will probably stay up. It's good to stay where you are because there could be aftershocks.

Making Fizzy Sherbet

Today Kotuku class worked in groups to make fizzy sherbet.  We knew that the icing sugar was probably for sweetness and that the jelly crystals would add flavour.  We found out that citric acid is a natural acid that comes from fruit and is used to give tartness in drinks and sweets.  We thought that the baking soda was probably the ingredient that makes sherbet foam and fizz in our mouths.

Everyone enjoyed making it and it tasted delicious.  We used a lollipop and our fingers to taste our sherbet.  We also found out that the citric acid dissolves on our tongue because of our saliva.  The citric acid and the baking soda mix together and create a gas called Carbon Dioxide.  This gas makes bubbles that foam and fizz on our tongue.

Winter Sports Tournament

The Primary Winter Sports Tournament is on this Tuesday 25 August.  It is being held at Henley School and all students in Kotuku and Kereru classes are involved.  It is usually only for year 5 and 6 students, but this year we have included our lucky year 4 students as well.  It will be on for most of the day and parents and family are welcome to come and support us.  We have teams for rugby, netball, football and Boccia.  Postponement day is Thursday if it rains.

Below is a list of what you will need on Tuesday:

*PE gear (uniform for netball team)
*Appropriate footwear depending on code (eg. rugby boots, football boots, running shoes)
*Morning tea, lunch and a big drink
*Shin pads, mouth guards (appropriate to code)

Remember, we are representing St Paul's School. We need to listen to the coaches, referees and umpires. We need to be supportive of our team members, obey the rules, be a good sport and HAVE FUN!!

Kereru and Kotuku classes are having a mid term break from homework during week 6.  So, no homework this week :)

Why do you need salt to make ice cream?

This week we tried to make ice cream in our classroom without a freezer.  We put 1/2 cup cream, some sugar and vanilla essence in a small zip lock bag.  We put the small bag into a bigger bag filled with ice cubes and some salt.  We massaged the bags to freeze the liquid cream into solid ice cream.

Our experiment didn't work and we couldn't work out why we needed salt in the ice (as we knew that salt is used to melt ice).  We ended up putting our ice cream in the freezer overnight to help it to set. We ate it the next day and most of our class liked the taste :)

At the bottom of this post is a video that Mrs Trolle found that explains why we needed the salt. Watch it and see if you can now explain why salt is important.

ps. Kotuku class . . . I don't think we added enough salt to the bag!

French Knitting

Our class has gone a little mad for French Knitting!  We are knitting up a storm to see who can make the longest knitting by the end of week 6.  Some people are knitting their favourite rugby team colours.  It was tricky to start with but now everyone in Kotuku class is an expert and are happy to help other students in the school to get started.  This is a wonderful winter activity and everyone seems to love to stay inside on rainy days and knit :)

"It makes us slow down and think about just one thing" Nick

"It's very relaxing" Autahi

"It's a mindful activity" Lucas

"It's a good thing to do on a rainy day" Katie

"It calms you down after you've had a busy day" Jasmine
