Poppies

For art last week we painted fields of poppies.  This was related to our current topic, "ANZACs and Us".  We read the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" written by John McCrae and found out why the poppy has become a special symbol in New Zealand and Australia to remember people who died in the war.

What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

During the second week of term 1, Mrs Trolle took photos of our whole class and asked the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?".  These photos are going to be part of a display in our classroom.  Here are a few . . .  come and see all of them!

Kotuku Placemats

At Kotuku class we have been working on our placemats that have a Kotuku on it.
Mrs Trolle went for a bike ride on the weekend and she went under a bridge and she saw really cool bird paintings. Mrs Trolle took a photo of them (there was a Kotuku, Kereru, Piwakawaka and a Tui). So for our placemats we were going to paint a Kotuku. We used small and medium size brushes. First we painted the background where we got to choose a flat hill or a steep hill. Next we painted the Toi Toi which is a fluffy sort of plant. After that we painted the foreground which was the Kotuku.
Kotuku class has done a really great job at doing their Kotuku placemats.
Here are a few demonstrations.

Student Council & Kotuku Flag Competition Winner

Jasmine had a great day on Friday!  She was voted (by Kotuku class) to be our student council representative.  Well done to Luke W and Autahi for being in second place together. She also won the Kotuku flag competition (also voted by Kotuku class).  Otis' design was in second place. Jasmine's design is going to be made into a real flag that we can use for our class.
Well done Jasmine :)

Weetbix Tryathlon

On Sunday some children from Kotuku class went to the Weetbix Tryathlon and they got some prizes!!! Everyone that competed got a medal and a shirt. Lucas and Flynn competed in a soccer game and got some glasses and a cap. After everyone got to the finish line people started giving out water and pouring some on their heads. While the helpers were doing that other helpers were taking photos of you and your medal. After that you finally got to get out. When you were at the exit you got to choose if you wanted a small apple or not. When you start your race you start in the sea for swimming. Lucas, Sean, Flynn and Jasmine swam 100 meters. When you finish swimming you run up the beach and cross the road and run into the transaction square to find your place with your stuff. You put on your shoes, shirt and helmet. Then you take your bike, run to the bike entrance then hop on the bike and go!!!! You have to bike two whole laps which is four km.  Next you run for 1 1/2km to the finish line.
